The $200 Amex Platinum Airline Credit Is Back

Amex Platinum Card

One of the most compelling reasons to keep the American Express Platinum card is for the $200 annual airline fee reimbursement. Of course it can be difficult for most people to spend $200 on crappy food and booze in flight, bag fees, or one day airline lounge passes. What many people have found is that gift card purchases will often trigger the automatic credit. Some people found out at the end of August was that gift card purchases did not trigger the credit. As a result some people were calling or chatting with Amex online and lying by saying the charge was for a seat fee, baggage fee, etc. I myself thought this was probably a technical issue, potentially caused by a change by either the way Amex was coding the reimbursement in the system, or a change by how the airlines were coding the charge. In any case, there is no need to fret any longer it appears the issue is fixed and gift card purchases are now triggering the credit.

For those unfamiliar with the way the credit works…

How Often Can I Change My Preferred Airline for The $200 Reimbursement?

You can change your airline once per year in January or for new accounts right after you open your new account. They usually give you one month to change your preferred airline.

How Long Does It Take To Issue the Credit?

According to Amex it takes up to 4 weeks, and they ask that you wait that long before calling customer service. I have found that in the past it has only taken 3-7 days for the credit to appear. In some cases if you make the purchase right before your statement closes it can take a bit longer.
