IHG 2015 Promo “Set Your Sights” Earn 50,000 Bonus Points

IHG has been busy over the last 6 months cranking out some pretty lucrative promotions. Their most recent Into The Nights promotion where you could easily earn 2 free nights or 50,000 points was a total no-brainer. I ended up earning the two free nights, but completing just two stays at a Holiday Inn Express for just over $200 total. One stay was for work and the second was an $79 mattress run at a hotel 5 miles from my home.

Starting in January 2015 IHG rolled out their new promotion called Set Your Sights. The promotion runs from January 1 through April 30, 2015. As with the last promotion you need to complete 4 of 5 offers to earn a point bonus. In my case the bonus is 50,000 points. I value IHG points at .65 cents per point, so the bonus is worth about $325. Unfortunately this time IHG made the tasks a teeny bit harder than last time. In order to earn my bonus I need to complete 4 of the following:

  • Book 2 stays using the IHG app
  • Stay 5 nights
  • Book a Mini Vacation Package
  • Apply for the IHG Rewards Credit Card
  • Book a Bonus Points Package

Is this challenge doable within reason? I’ll start out by eliminating the “Mini Vacation Package.” After looking at the page it advertises a 4-day, 3 nights stay for only $199 at a resort property. Is this a good deal? Possibly, but the fine print discloses that the purpose of the offer is to solicit Time Share sales. Uh…no thank you! Some people (who are either ridiculous cheapskates, or do not value their time) don’t mind wasting 2+ hours at a Time Share presentation, and then being accosted by high pressure salesmen afterward. But I do value my time, especially when I’m on vacation, and probably parted with a few hundred bucks, or thousands of cheaply acquired miles to get there, so I for one will not be participating in that task.

The other tasks do seem reasonable. In fact, I think I could complete them with only 5 nights and two stays. Not bad. Assuming that I get a couple of $79 mattress runs in like I did last time, I believe I could finish this list of tasks by spending less than $500. The only challenge is applying for the IHG Rewards Card, which might not be worth it to me. For one it would require a hard pull on my credit, which all credit card churners value like gold. In addition the IHG credit card is issued by Chase, and there again I am limited by their 4 card per customer policy. I already have the Freedom, Sapphire, and Marriott Visa, so this would occupy my last remaining credit card slot. Might be worth it, but we’ll see.

How Do I Participate in the IHG Set Your Sights Promotion?

  1. Visit this page and enter your IHG Rewards member number to see what bonus points offer you have received and what tasks you have to complete.
  2. Review the tasks and determine, which 4 are the easiest to complete by April 30 considering your upcoming travel plans.
  3. Make you hotel bookings on the IHG App or website (see below to see what rates qualify and how to reduce cost).
  4. Complete your stays and check the page 1-2 weeks after your stay to make sure that the stay posted correctly.

Tips on Completing the IHG 2015 Promotion

1 – Make sure you sign up right away. If you sign up after the start of the promotion your stays may not count toward the promotion.

2 – Book only qualifying rates. Remember that paid stays and any rates including corporate, government, AAA count toward the promotion. Free nights, point redemption nights, stays booked through an Online Travel Agency like Orbitz or Expedia, Friends and Family rates, and 50% off stay certificate rates do not count. I have heard some exceptions to this, but I would not mess around with these types of discounted rates as you may shoot yourself in the foot.

3 – For the stays that you don’t book using the IHG App, make sure you link through a cash back portal like TopCashBack or eBates in order to earn a rebate. IHG occasionally runs promotions through these sites where they offer up to 10% or even on rare occasions 15% cash back, which will obviously reduce your cost of the stay.

4 – Check the site weekly to make sure that your stay and completed tasks posted correctly. I have not had a problem with this recently, but a couple of years ago I had an issue and needed to call customer service to have it fixed. Remember that the onus is on you to make sure that you meet all of the criteria to earn the bonus points. It will take a little bit of organization and extra effort, but trust me it is worth it in the end.

What IHG brand hotels qualify?

  • InterContinental
  • Crowne Plaza
  • Hotel Indigo
  • Holiday Inn
  • Holiday Inn Express
  • Staybridge Suites
  • Candlewood Suites

Bottom Line

The “Set Your Sights” 2015 IHG Promotion is another in a string of potentially highly lucrative hotel promotions on the part of the marketing department at IHG. I do miss the days of “Crack the Case,” and the other crazy promos where you could earn upwards of 100K+ miles, but sadly (or gladly) the economy has since recovered and IHG has commensurately scaled back their generosity. That said, Set Your Sights is probably the best Q1 2015 hotel loyalty promotion available so far, so it should definitely be in consideration for your upcoming travel plans.
